New Year, Same You

Soon everyone will welcome the new year and say goodbye to the old. Along with 2016, the well known New Year’s resolutions shall arrive. A New Year’s resolution is almost like a tradition that many take seriously… at first, because after a few days, these promises fade away. This is a problem for many just like sophomore Michelle Quiñones, “I don’t usually make a New Year’s resolution, but when I do I always have trouble actually accomplishing them.” In a study published in www.statisticbrain.com by the University of Scranton, the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that only 8% of the people who make a New Year’s resolution succeed. That is out of the 45% of those that make a new year’s resolution, 17% occasionally do and 38% that never do. But why do people set goals in the first place? When asked, sophomore Illiana Magaña said, “To motivate themselves to accomplish their goals.” With a new year, many people want to start fresh and change completely by the next year. Many want to improve their lifestyle, break a habit, have better relationships with the people around them, or continue the resolutions they couldn’t complete last year. But what is the secret to becoming a new person? If making a New Year’s resolution is in students’ plans, then the first step is pretty simple. The motivation to continue has to be the powerful desire to go on. People have to wholeheartedly believe in themselves in order to stick to their plans throughout the whole process. Many fail in actually keeping up with the necessary steps, but in many cases it is because the resolution is something that is impossible. Picture this scenario, someone’s New Year’s resolution is to never eat junk food ever again. People can set themselves to change their diet, but it must be done in a reasonable way to make it succeed. Instead, the goal can be to eat healthier or to eat only one bag of chips every other week. With that, slowly but surely, the much desired wish of eating healthier will come true. In order to keep up with the New Year’s resolution it is essential to come up with an effective way to reach the objective. Making a list of habits that you plan to change is a useful way to start. This way, people can keep track of the new routine and accommodate themselves to it. For example, someone’s wish could be to spend more time with family. Writing the new routine down and following it makes it become a habit. Another big part of the New Year’s resolution is that it is okay to fail. A small slip shouldn’t upset anyone. Just get up and start again. It can be very hard to stick to something new, but keep in mind that once the goal is met, it will be very rewarding.
