Are You Naughty or Nice?

It’s almost Christmas time and Santa has a list; he’s checking it twice. What makes you so sure you’re naughty or nice? Everybody’s goal is to be on the nice list, but first they need to see if they’re eligible. To make it to the nice list you have to be that honest helping hand that anyone can rely on or that trustworthy friend that is full of kindness. This is a quality that today’s youth claims to have, but who are they kidding? Everyone has that naughty side they’re ashamed of, but what makes a person naughty anyway? Offenses that can get you in trouble with Santa are lying, fighting, ditching, stealing, and cheating (regardless of whether it’s on a test or on your significant other). No matter how nice you claim to be, you have almost certainly committed at least one of these offenses, and that is okay because you’re only human. The most common crimes that people are guilty of are lying and cheating. Why do people do it? Maybe it is part of human nature. Although society may accept you after committing these wrongdoings, Santa may not. There are actually brave souls who will admit to committing naughty offenses but still believe they’re nice. When Fernando Garcia was asked if he committed any of the common crimes, he seemed a little hesitant to answer, “I have lied, I haven’t stolen anything, and I have never ditched and I’ve... uh... never cheated.” He might have a sweet personality, but that might not keep him off the naughty list. Another student admits to committing an offense, but not a common offense. Cristina Villalobos admits to fighting with her sister but says, “I still think I should be on the nice list because I only fight when I’m provoked, and also it’s very hard to ignore my sister, but I still manage to do so most of the time.” Since it wasn’t her fault could that save her from the naughty list? Eveanna Del Cid also fights with her sister but believes fighting with siblings is a norm that shouldn’t be taken so harshly. All these wrongdoings and none of them are naughty? Hmmm. If it were up to Santa, none of these “nice” people would receive anything, but sadly Santa is not in charge anymore. Times have changed and parents are a little more generous, actually a lot more generous. Kids are spoiled by their parents for not committing actual crimes, unlike Santa who would put them on the naughty list for committing a misdemeanor. People don’t know or even care if they are naughty or nice because they know either way, there are going to be goodies under the tree with their names on them.
