Ever heard the expression “the glass is half full”? People usually use this expression to describe people who are optimistic, but what does the word exactly mean? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Optimism is the feeling or belief that good things will happen in the future. Put aside the literal definition and the word that comes to mind is hope. The word optimism comes from the latin word optimus meaning best. This mean that an optimistic person is always looking for the best outcome.

When negative events occur, think of the circumstances that could have lead to this happening instead of blaming yourself. If you do poorly on an exam, where you especially busy in that week? Were you sleep deprived? What outside circumstances contributed to this failure? Instead use this negative experience and find the silver lining. You need to keep in mind that it does not reflect a personal weakness.

Anytime I undertake a new challenge I'm optimistic that I will succeed. And the more I try different things, the more confident I am that I can overcome these obstacles. It’s made me a stronger person and better and it can dramatically improve your confidence.A balanced optimist looks at reality, acknowledge the difficulties and obstacles, but is not discouraged by them. A balanced optimist can see the good and the bad, but at the same time, expects success and puts forth effort to make things turn out well.

Being optimistic doesn't mean waiting for things to happen by themselves. It means expecting the best, believing that the best will happen, but at the same time making decisions, following them acting and making them happen.

Why be an optimist? Because optimism keeps you motivated and energetic, pursuing what you want with ambition, confidence and happiness. It helps you focus on your vision and makes every day a happy day.
