On January 24 all three schools - Libra, SSJ, and HPIAM put themselves on display for the incoming freshman. The three schools had their leadership classes ready to go and ready to recruit. SSJ’s leadership was located in front of the quad, HPIAM was by Libra’s first hallway classroom window, and Libra was located by the welcome center.
The rivalry between the three schools has always there. However, that was not so evident until last year’s recruitment fair which is where it all began. According to an anonymous source, “Last year HPIAM was very…’ambitious.’ They were grabbing people and trying to get as many people as possible. Libra did not do as well as we hoped.”
HPIAM was out in full display with their banners and posters. They were giving away free stuff as well, trying to impress the newcomers. They had more people and overall were very successful, surpassing Libra Academy.
This year was very different.
Overall all three schools had their leadership, principals, and teachers out there answering questions and talking to parents and future students. But while SSJ had a pretty display of their activities and HPIAM had impressive decorations and a photo booth, Libra came out in full force.
Almost all of Libra Academy was there representing their school. Teachers such as Ms. Granados, Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Diaz, Mr. Barbour, and Ms. Lambert were there. 13 teachers out of the 20 teachers in all of Libra were there, each representing their department.
Along with the different departments, Libra had a display of their main clubs and electives. The clubs formed outside were the Math Club, Humanitarian Club, The Environmental Club, Youth Action, the Animal Activists. Along with the clubs were different departments such as english, math, and spanish, as well as the Journalism elective. Unlike all the other schools, Libra’s clubs were outside speaking with parents and showing all of their accomplishments. According to Libra junior Joseph Hernandez who was a representative at the Environmental Club table, “Many students were very shy, but I had fun. I met a lot of new people, and received a lot of interest and curiosity about the club.”
In Libra Academy’s halls, something else was taking place. Inside the classrooms, there were three different panels; alumni, internship, and teacher panels. The alumni panelists were students from past graduating classes speaking about their experience and success from attending Libra Academy. These students focused on life after Libra. Along with that was the internship group, that spoke about how Libra focuses on giving students internships opportunities. According to Libra junior Jesus, one of the students that was part of the internship panel, “It was a bit confusing because it was difficult to decide whether to speak English or Spanish, but other than that I think we got the point across really well.” The parent panel also was a success, with parents speaking about their experience at Libra and how it has helped their children to succeed.
Aside from the overall academics, Libra’s school spirit was high as well. While Libra was not as flashy as the other schools were, the halls were decorated to full capacity with posters and other decor hand made by students. Along with that were cheerleaders placed inside Libra’s hallways, keeping the school spirit high. Overall this was a proud accomplishment for Libra Academy.
