Have you recently been to the “happiest place on earth?” Are you planning to go to Disneyland but worried about the recent measles outbreak?
According to the L.A. Times there were about 73 cases of measles victims in Disneyland. Only seven of those victims were vaccinated, and roughly only two were actually fully vaccinated. For a full vaccination you need to get two doses of the vaccine to develop more antibodies. If the person only has one dose of the vaccination then the individual can easily still get infected by the measles
Many parents take their children to Disneyland and some of which are toddlers. Cancer patients and children under one can not get vaccinated so they run the risk of getting infected.
Not only is the measles outbreak happening in Disneyland but there have been many other cases in southern California. The measles outbreak occurred during mid-December in Disneyland. The first people to get infected were actually Disneyland employees. Now the disease has spread all around Orange County and is continuing to spread all around southern California. Students like Albert Peralta and Asuri Garcia, described the measles outbreak as “scary”.Disneyland.
Think of it this way, if there is a group of people in a crowded place (like Disneyland) and, about 90% of them have a full vaccination, those 90% are not going to get infected by measles and the other 10% who run a risk can easily go see a doctor if they can get infected. In this scenario only a few would be infected with measles, therefore it isn't likely to spread across the U.S. Now if it was only 20% who were fully vaccinated the other 80% who probably would get infected will most likely spread it around.
According to Genesis Juarez, a student at Libra,”It is quite upsetting because many families go to Disneyland to enjoy themselves however this outbreak has led to precautionary steps and makes the experience of Disneyland more of a hassle rather than an enjoyment because they are worried. Other students have also shown concern over the measles outbreak. Jean Garcia stated “that you have to be more careful and get vaccinated as soon as possible.”
If you are planning to take a trip to Disneyland it is highly recommended to get the full vaccination. If more people get vaccinated then not only will they be helping themselves but also those who can not get vaccinated.
